What to visit in Tuglie?

Of particular interest are the “Passaturi Caves” or “Old Houses”, located near the elementary schools, which according to some scholars were the home of the ancient “Tulli” people.

After the occupation of Otranto, the Ottoman hordes carried out terrible raids throughout Salento, pillaging and destroying villages, towns and churches.

The farmhouse of Tuglie was also razed to the ground.
For a long time the fiefdom of Tuglie remained abandoned and lifeless.

After the destruction carried out by the Turks, the territory of Tuglie passed into the ownership of various feudal lords, until in 1681 it was purchased by Francesco Antonio Cariddi, lord of a noble family from Gallipoli.

When it was a fiefdom of Baron Filippo Guarini, it received a new demographic boost.

Le residential buildings in Tuglie They are of the Mediterranean type, which was a typical way of building houses in Salento.

From narrow streets of the historic center you can still see them today

  • the old wells
  • the pileddhe,
  • focus them,
  • and the characteristic arches.

The pileddhe, almost always placed side by side with the wells, were used to contain the water used by the women of the house to wash the kitchen utensils and the family's dirty clothes (with the ancient lissìa).

The arches, which connect one house to another, are one of the main characteristics of the ancient courtyards of Tuglie.

old focal lengths they are both fireplaces and chimneys.
Some focal lengths are very old, but they stand the test of time undaunted.

Among the most important buildings located in the Tuglie area, we recall:

  • Villa Luisa

immersed in a large park, on via Martiri di Marcinelle. It belonged to the heirs of Francesco Della Gatta.

  • il Ducal Palace

residence of the Venturi dukes, built in the early 1600s.
Inside is the Museum of Peasant Civilization and Popular Traditions of Salento.

Various buildings of a certain importance are present in the historic centre and near Piazza Garibaldi in the municipality of Tuglie, in Salento;
they date back to the period between the mid-eighteenth century and the end of the nineteenth century.

There are also more than twenty sacred votive shrines built between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries.

In the Tuglie countryside, we suggest a beautiful historic residence The Baronessa Estate, where to spend unforgettable moments relaxing holidays in Salento, a few steps from the beaches of Gallipoli.
