On the slope of the Serra dei Cianci , overlooking the Adriatic Sea of Puglia, stands Gagliano del Capo , a small and charming village of around 6000 inhabitants a few kilometres from Santa Maria di Leuca , in the province of Lecce.
The presence of menhirs in the area documents human existence dating back to the Bronze Age.
The town developed particularly in the early Middle Ages, welcoming refugees from the destruction of the nearby hamlets of Pulsano and Misciano.
Two hamlets also belong to the municipality of Gagliano del Capo :
Since October 2006, part of its territory has been included in the Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca and Tricase Forest Coast Park , established by the Puglia Region with the aim of safeguarding the eastern coast of Salento, rich in valuable architectural heritage and important animal and plant species.
Worth noting is the splendid stretch of coast within the municipality of Gagliano del Capo, in particular the Ciolo area, famous for the Gibò nightclub.
At Gibò it is pleasant to listen to good music and you can enjoy the spectacular cliff that can be admired by travelling along the coastal road and crossing a bridge high above sea level.
In Gagliano del Capo you can stay at the nearby Hotels of Santa Maria di Leuca.
Near the town, you can sleep in Santa Maria di Leuca, at the Messapia resort , Hotel l'approdo , Albergo 2 Mari.
In Piazza San Rocco there is the column of the same name, which features a statue of the town's patron saint at its top.
In front of this column, following Corso Umberto I, stands the column of the Immaculate Conception , adjacent to the chapel of the same name.
Next to the column of San Rocco , there is the Mother Church , dedicated to the Patron Saint, built in 1608.
Originally, the parish church was dedicated to the Madonna Assunta.
Following the plague epidemic that spread in 1800, the population asked for the intercession of San Rocco, who was later named patron saint of the town.
Also worth visiting in Gagliano del Capo is Palazzo Ciardo , the birthplace of the famous Salento painter Vincenzo Ciardo.
Of certain interest is the historic centre , which winds through narrow streets paved with the characteristic “chianche”.
In the historic center there are other buildings, almost hidden among the other houses.
On the outskirts it is possible to visit the Convent of San Francesco di Paola , built in the 17th century.
A few km from Gagliano del Capo, in the province of Lecce , you will find other towns and historic villages to visit during your holiday in Salento, for example: Alessano , Ruffano , Specchia , Morciano di Leuca , Presicce , Salve , Castrignano del Capo.
