The town of Lizzanello is thought to have originated in the 13th century; it is also believed to have been part of the County of Lecce and was a fiefdom of the Paladini, D'Affitto, Chjurlia, and Lotti families.

Today Lizzanello is an agricultural centre in central Salento located south-east of Lecce , amidst lush olive groves, in the plain that extends north of the Serre di Galugnano.

The ancient part of the urban fabric, of which there are still evident signs, was made up of the courtyard and terraced houses, which can be found in the historic centre of the town which includes

  • St. Lorenzo Square
  • the 'Strittula' (via C. De Giorgi)
  • Palazzo Street (Corso della Repubblica)
  • Porta Nuova street (presumably Paladini street)
  • Lu puzzu pindinu (via Mazzini)
  • New Street (R.Elena Street)
  • the shapes (via D'Afflitto).

These were the streets that branched off from Piazza S. Lorenzo and which, almost encircling the town, gave it a fortified appearance also because they led to S. Lorenzo Nuovo which, as well as being a church, was also a fortress that had the task of defending the town from the assault of the Turks.
