Martignano is the smallest village in Grecìa Salentina , located 95 meters above sea level, on hills full of olive trees.
It has a population of around 1800 inhabitants and is part, together with 9 other municipalities, of the Union of Municipalities of Grecìa salentina , an area located south-east of Lecce, characterised by a shared historical-linguistic heritage bearing witness to the Greek-Byzantine populations.
The most tangible sign of this tradition is “griko”, an ancient Greek that older people still speak today.
Despite such a small community, Martignano can count on an environment rich in initiatives.
The carnival and the patronal festival bring thousands of people to the small town, not to mention other important events, such as the festival and the “morte te lu Paolinu”.
Its location in Salento guarantees easy access to the main tourist attractions and makes it a key point of reference.
It is undoubtedly the ideal landing place from which to set off every day towards the places and flavours of Grecìa and Salento.
The neglect and especially the building policies of the past years have erased a large part of the historic center of the town.
Fortunately, however, not all has been lost and thanks to the recovery work of recent years, Martignano can offer appreciable architectural and artistic testimonies.
