Historical notes on Casarano (Lecce – Puglia)

Many believe the city has Roman origins. In fact, the toponym Casarano (Caesaranum) probably refers to a vast territory owned by a certain Caesar, a Roman centurion who received the lands as a reward for a battle won, but no archaeological evidence has confirmed its origins.

The excavations carried out in November 1976 confirmed the existence of a village, praedium rusticum, from the late Roman period in the area east of the church of Casaranello.

This certainty is documented by the presence of two epigraphs dating back to the 1st century AD, found in Santa Maria della Croce (450 AD), one of the oldest and most valuable monuments of early Christian art in Puglia, an authentic jewel of the city and of Salento as a whole.

The church of S. Maria della Croce is located in Casaranello , a toponym that originated in the Middle Ages, when the ancient urban nucleus of Casarano split into Casaranum magnum and Casaranum parvum.

Built around the middle of the 5th century AD on a Latin cross plan with three naves, the small sacred building displays an early Christian mosaic important for its chromatic and figurative values as well as Byzantine frescoes from the 11th and 14th centuries and Gothic frescoes from the 13th century of complex and valuable workmanship.
