The town of Cursi is located just under 30 km from the capital Lecce and is 18 km from Otranto, 40 km from Leuca and Gallipoli, and just over 12 km from the Adriatic Sea, as the crow flies.
It is surrounded by several neighbouring countries:
Sweathers, Melpignano, Bagnolo del Salento,
Carpignan, Muro Leccese e Castrignano dei Greci.
Built during the Roman conquest as a courier station (diarii tastores, from which Cursi comes), it was initially a fief of the Church of Otranto.
In the 14th century, the De Hugot family took possession of it.
In 1500 Maria Quatrara, who had inherited it from Bellisario Maramonte, became its feudal lord.
It then passed, in 1534, to the Bellotti family, until 1542, when it became the property of the Maramonte family. Gioacchino Maramonte bought it from Ettore Brayda, but it passed to the Ventura family the following year.
In 1661 it was brought as a dowry by Giulia Cicinelli to the Caracciolo family who, the last lords of Cursi, held the fiefdom as a principality.
The economy of Cursi is based almost exclusively on the extraction and processing of Lecce Stone.
It is no coincidence that Cursi is considered the most important mining basin in Salento.
