There are various hypotheses regarding the origins of the town of Presicce, in Puglia , and the most widely accepted one refers to the large presence of surface aquifers, which in the past drove many residents of the nearby hamlets, especially during periods of drought, to seek water in this municipality in lower Salento, where they later settled.
According to some, the origins of Presicce, in the province of Lecce, date back to the early Middle Ages, probably around the 7th or 8th century; certainly by the 12th century, during the Norman period, Presicce was already a hamlet.
From the 13th to the 19th century Presicce, Lecce belonged to numerous feudal lords, among whom we should remember:
The main axis of the inhabited center of Presicce, Lecce is formed by the current Via M. Arditi and Via A. Gramsci.
The town centre of Presicce extends along this axis, in a series of alleys and small squares, with mainly courtyard-shaped buildings .
In past centuries, the economy of Presicce, in the lower Salento, was predominantly agricultural: this is evidenced, among other things, by the numerous underground oil mills found underground in the centre of this Salento municipality.
The municipality of Presicce has the largest number of cave oil mills.
The oldest are still identifiable on the Serra di Pozzomauro, dug into the calcarenite rock, probably by pastoral agricultural communities with the help and experience of the Basilian monks, in an attempt to reorganise the surviving populations that escaped the Saracen invasions of the 9th and 10th centuries.
From the rural chapel of Santa Maria di Loreto to Celsorizzo (a locality in the municipality of Acquarica del Capo ) there are still significant evidence of hermit life, organised in laura, with crypts enlarged like a trapezoid.
