The residential area of Spongano is located 95 metres above sea level, between the Serra di Supersano and the Adriatic coast of Castro Marina , which is approximately 6 km away.
The territory of Spongano has been inhabited since ancient times as demonstrated by the megalithic monuments that are scattered in the surrounding area.
The first certain news dates back to 1103, when Spongano was subjected to Tancredi d'Altavilla, lord of the county of Castro, later absorbed by Ruggero II, Count of Sicily.

The Mother Church of Spongano is dedicated to Saint George Martyr.
It was built in the second half of the 700th century and originally consisted of a single nave while the two side naves were built only towards the mid-800th century.
Worthy of note is the main altar located in the apse and delimited by an iron balustrade.
The Spongano Dolmen, known as Piedi Grandi , from the bottom where it is located, overlooks the Pastine local road, which flows into the Spongano-Montesano Salentino municipal road.
The side panels are made up of two vertical rectangular slabs, one with a hole, 70 centimetres high, while the upper closure is made up of a quadrangular horizontal slab with rounded corners, on average 110-120 centimetres wide.

The 500th century Baronial Palace of Spongano was the home of the Bacile di Castiglione family for approximately five centuries.
It was originally a castle, later modified into a residential building, whose fortifications, of medieval origin, were incorporated into the palace.
In the second half of the 800th century, Baron Filippo Bacile had a second floor added as he needed to expand the space to accommodate his fourteen children (Filippo also built the local railway line which still today connects Spongano with Lecce).
The chapel of the Immaculate Conception dates back to the 17th century.
It has a simple façade in Lecce stone enriched by the entrance door and a large central window.
The interior has a single nave embellished by the main altar.
