Of uncertain origin, the small town of Grecia Salentina does not preserve many historical memories.
Two menhirs testify to human presence in the area dating back to the Bronze Age.
During the Middle Ages the country strongly assimilated Byzantine influence, so much so that the Greek religious rite became extinct only in 1688.
Here, as in other centers of Grecìa Salentina, there are numerous wells that once satisfied the water needs.
Each individual well once had its own name:
The parish church , dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul (17th century), has two sundials and a Latin inscription on the external walls.
They are worthy of note
In ancient times, between Zollino and Martano, there stood the hamlet of Apigliano , of which only the small church rebuilt in 1582 now survives, as is remembered by a Greek inscription.
In the Griko language this place of worship is called “A Laurenti” (San Lorenzo); the interior features traces of frescoes.
