The origins of the town of San Cassiano , in the province of Lecce, are obscure, although it is possible to date them back to around the end of the first millennium of the Christian era.
The settlement of a Basilian community is taken for granted, although there remains uncertainty about the role that this monastic community had in the foundation of the village.
In June 1031, San Cassiano was taken and sacked by the Saracens, and the survivors were probably few.
San Cassiano presents itself as a typical village of lower Salento which developed around the square, the centre of the town and the Mother Church.
There are no historical monuments of significant importance.
However, there is a Basilian crypt church of the 12th century dedicated to the Our Lady of Consolation, a place of worship for the Basilian monks and a sixteenth-century ducal palace, which was purchased and restored by the municipal administration and is now the seat of the town hall.
Important for the religious life of the town are the Mother Church dedicated to San Leonardo, whose origins date back to 1600 but which was rebuilt almost from scratch in 1849, and some votive chapels dedicated to San Rocco and San Giuseppe , of no artistic value.
Other churches dedicated to Saint Anne and Saint Sophia, mentioned in some eighteenth-century documents, were destroyed, as were the access gates to the ancient village.
Worth a visit for tourists: the Feast of San Giuseppe
It is a popular festival full of novelties not only from a gastronomic point of view but also from an entertainment one.
In addition to the traditional "focara" fireworks display, the event will also feature fire shows by renowned street artists and the ever-present live music.
